Sometimes, as if by the evening's design, you stumble upon the perfect
night spot.
The sign says Blue Martini, yet cool sips and an indigo mood are but
the first sensations rippling through the foyer. As rhythms begin
to sizzle, you realize there's cooking going on in there. Clearly,
this unique joint has a flavor all its own; a delicate, crisp and
classic cocktail backed by the meaty satiety of a bop chophouse...
the kind of place where people become regulars simply because they'd
never dream of leaving.
The very essence of taste lies somewhere within the dance between
Jeanine Mackie's warm but wise torch stylings and the lyrical, Parker-esque
impressionism that Pat Perez weaves around her as effortless supporting
color. While familiar, the word "standard" hardly applies
to any of their fare as they so own every story they tell as if for
the first time. Bobbing along a lush yet strikingly solid trio presence
that should satisfy any and all rhythmic or harmonic cravings, these
two seasoned voices elevate to become a third. Intermingled, they
cast a glowing vignette around both the most timeless and immediate
emotions of the idiom. Like all good jazz, theirs is city worn, love
weary and matter of fact in a way that nevertheless emerges hopeful.
Such are the finest ingredients that reveal sophisticated sensitivity
and a honed appreciation for nothing less than the finest of everything.
The only question that remains is... shaken or stirred?
